Pokémon GO brought millions of people outdoors and demonstrated the potential of games built on real-world maps. Kokume uses the same foundation for a strategy game where, instead of collecting, you develop territory, an economy and an army.
Instead of collecting, you occupy territory. Every captured region is a piece of a realm that produces resources and can be developed - progress accumulates instead of resetting when you skip a week.
Territory is contested. An attack on another region becomes a tower defense battle against defences created by another player.
Kokume is played directly on a map and does not use augmented reality. You do not need to point your phone at your surroundings, and the battery is not used to render objects through the camera. GPS still consumes power, of course.
Raid bosses appear in the wild at regular intervals and players take them down together. Rewards are split by how much damage each player dealt, so turning up late is still worth it.
Pokémon GO is an established game with years of development, while Kokume is an independent project in early access. This comparison therefore focuses on gameplay principles rather than scale or amount of content.
| What's compared | Pokémon GO | Kokume |
|---|---|---|
| Core loop | Catching, filling the dex, raids and gym battles | Claiming territory, constructing buildings, production and defence |
| Progression | Collection and trainer level | Size of your realm, economy, hero level and army strength |
| PvP | Gym battles and leagues with limited effect on the map | Fights over specific territory - winning changes who owns it |
| AR | Yes, optional | No - purely a map game |
| Rural play | Noticeably fewer stops and spawns than in cities | Territory covers the whole landscape, playable anywhere |
| Required activity | Without regular play the collection stalls | The economy produces between sessions, but land can be lost |
| Platforms | Android, iOS | Android and web browser |
Both games are played outdoors on a real-world map, with your location determining what you can do. Kokume, however, is a strategy game focused on construction, economy and territorial conflict rather than collecting.
No. The game runs on a map without augmented reality, so an ordinary Android 7.0 or newer with GPS and a connection is enough. You can try it in a web browser before you install anything.
Yes, and it is better that way. Players belong to one of three factions, share control of territory and go after raid bosses together. Most of the strategy talk happens on the community Discord, where you will find us too.
As much as you want. Capturing territory and fighting require you to be on location, but production runs automatically. The game therefore fits comfortably into a regular commute or a walk with the dog.
Kokume is free. Download it for Android or open the web version and capture your first nearby territory.
